Religion, Law & the Public Schools
The following information explains when and how religion can be expressed in a public school setting.
- It was ruled over forty years ago, that prayer could not be lead. Also, that scripture could not be read by a teacher in a public school.
- During non-education time, religious clubs can meet on
public school grounds. The clubs cannot interfere with regular educational
activities, and the school cannot initiate, direct, sponsor, participate in or
promote the religious club’s activities.
- Moments of silence cannot be used to promote religion or
religious acts such as prayer by the school. Students may pray and exercise their religion during these times.
- Organized events such as “See You at the Pole” are
permissible so long as they are conducted by students.
- Students are allowed to read their Bibles at school or
pray together before lunch so long as they do not force other students into
the activity and it doesn’t distract from learning activities.
